Edna Posey Chaffin
Edna Posey Chaffin was born May 31, 1922 in Holland, MO to W.C. Posey and Ruth Frona Hall Posey. She departed this life on August 10, 2020 in Caruthersville, MO. She was 98 years old.
Edna lived a full and active life. She graduated from Caruthersville High School in 1939 and from Southeast Missouri Teachers College in 1946. On December 21, 1947, in Caruthersville, she was united in marriage to John H. Chaffin, Jr.
She dedicated her life to teaching and was a mainstay at Caruthersville High School for 33 years. In addition to teaching freshman English for a few years before moving to the business department where she taught typing, shorthand, and secretarial practice, she also supervised the SOE (secretarial office practice) program and started the first FBLA chapter at CHS. She was honored as the Southeast Missouri Business Educator of the Year in 1981. After retirement, she worked at the Presbyterian Church and in the GED program and enjoyed playing bridge on a regular basic.
She was active in the Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church as a Sunday school teacher and UMW president. An accomplished musician (violin, piano, organ), she served as organist for church services for many years. She was a 56-year member of Chapter GV of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a member of the SEMO Club and the MO Retired Teachers Association.
Edna is survived by her two daughters, Susan Chaffin Matthews of Caruthersville and Kay Chaffin Nobles and her spouse, Rip Stroker of Fort Worth, TX and two grandsons, Jason Nobles of Fort Worth, TX and Christopher Nobles of Farmers Branch, TX. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews and one special great-great niece, Addisyn “Quenn Bee” Privett.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John Chaffin, her sisters Johnnie Nichols and Helen Mulkey, and a brother Clarence William Posey.
The family thanks Dr. Jim Bernard, Always First In-Home Services, Southgate Living Center and Missouri Delta Hospice for their loving care and concern.
Funeral services were held August 14 at 11:00 a.m. in the H.S. Smith Chapel with Rev. Jerry Mattson officiating. Interment in Pemiscot Memorial Gardens.
