Mary Frances Whitener

Mary Frances Whitener was born in Hayti, Missouri on February 21, 1929.  She was the daughter of the late Truman Theodore Martin and Flossie Vivian Ford Martin.

She departed this life at the Southgate Living Center on May 30, 2017.  She was 88 years old.

Mary Frances graduated from Hayti High School in 1947.

On February 21, 1947 she was united in marriage to Mr. Robert Whitener.  He preceded her in death in 2011.

Mary Frances had many hobbies.  She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and also served as a Brownie Scout Leader.  She and Robert were known for their gardening and then canning the things they gathered.  They loved going to their cabin and fishing.  She was known for her china painting and oil painting.  She played bridge with a local group for many years and then learned how to play bridge on line.  This opened up a whole new world for her.  Mary Frances loved playing golf.  She spent many hours playing golf not only with friends but more importantly with her husband and her children.  Her most important job in life was the devotion she showed to her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

1 daughter – Cara Lee Whitener Petersen and her husband, Eric – Caruthersville, Missouri

8 grandchildren – Allison Lee Whitener Schroeder and her husband, Justin – Dyersburg, Tennessee

Robert Hayden Whitener and his wife, Abby – Blytheville, Arkansas

Halley Lynn Whitener Gurley and her husband, Jared – Kennett, Missouri

Mary Catherine Faris – Memphis, Tennessee

Jennifer Lynn Thompson Reeves – Caruthersville, Missouri

John Clyde Thompson, II and his wife, Joly – Caruthersville, Missouri

Matthew Stuart Pierce and his wife, Mary Hannah – Caruthersville, Missouri

Erin Elizabeth Pierce – Memphis, Tennessee

She was preceded in death by her parents, Truman and Flossie Martin, her husband, Glen Robert Whitener, a daughter, Mary Lynn Whitener Thompson and four brothers, Teddy, Richard, Robert and Glen Martin.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 4 at 3:00 p.m. in H.S. Smith Chapel with Mr. Ed Reeves officiating.  Interment followed in Woodlawn Cemetery.
