George Owens​

George Owens was born October 24, 1925 in Steele, Missouri.  He was the son of the late William Riley Owens and Nina Lucille Jones Owens.

He departed this life suddenly on January 19, 2017 at the King’s Daughters and Sons Home in Bartlett, Tennessee.  He was 91 years old.

On January 5, 1944, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, George enlisted in the United States Army.  He served under General George Patton during World War II.  During this time he received the American Theatre Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, a World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and 2 Overseas Bars.  He received his honorary discharge on May 4, 1946, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.

On May 30, 1949 in Piggott, Arkansas he was united in marriage to Lastine Wade.  They were married for 63 years.  She preceded him in death.

George worked for Brown Shoe until his retirement.

He was a very active member of the Wesleyan Church in Caruthersville.

1 Daughter – Lynette Vaden & her husband, Gary – Bartlett, Tennessee

3 Grandchildren – Carmen Mills – New Orleans, Louisiana


Chad Owens – Caruthersville, Missouri

Kara Vaden – Grants Pass, Oregon

Many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, 3 brothers-Tommy Owens, William Owens, Lawrence (Junior) Owens, and 3 sisters-Irene Williams, Lerlene Whitfield, Dorothy Nell Owens.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 23, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Wesleyan Church in Caruthersville, Missouri with Rev. Kenny Lee officiating. The interment was in the Little Prairie Cemetery in Caruthersville. Pall-Bearers were: Gary Owens, Chad Owens, Jeremy Larson, Wesley Cannon, Jerry Cannon and Gary Vaden.
